The residential project was designed by Ronald Zurcher, a renowned architect known for such notable designs as the Costa Rica Marriott in San Jose, the JW Marriott at Pinilla and the Four Seasons and Papagayo Peninsula.
For the concept Zurcher proposed recreating a type of traditional Spanish architecture that harkens back to the haciendas of yesteryear and is also very typical of Guanacaste province. He achieved his vision by designing simple lines and creating spaces where neighbors interact in traditional corridors or covered “zaguanes,” which offer protection from the sun, wind and rain and provide cool areas that do not need air conditioning.
Malinches del Mar is a group of several residential units constructed around an open patio. The hacienda concept balances well with the surrounds, placing columns and wooden cobertores in the staircases, stone flooring outside, and using materials like caña brava (a type of reed) for the soaring 10-foot ceilings, which offer natural cooling and add an open effect to the villas.
The bedrooms feature flooring made from local woods, such as teak and almond, which assures quality and balance with nature. Several units have interior gardens that let in natural light and complement the beautiful views to the outdoors. All the bathrooms feature marble floors, showers and sinks.
The villas are built in six distinct styles that feature one or two stories and three or four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and walk-in closet. All the homes have large kitchens with granite countertops, travertine marble veneer bathroom walls, wide verandas, family rooms, laundry rooms, and balconies. In each section, one villa has been built and equipped with elements convenient for people with physical limitations. All units offer a covered garage and storage area.
